How VIT CGPA Is Calculated
VIT calculates CGPA as a credit weighted average of every semester you've completed, not a simple average of your GPA scores. That distinction matters more than most students realize. If Semester 1 carried 22 credits and Semester 3 carried only 18, those two semesters don't count equally toward your final number - the semester with more credits pulls harder on your overall CGPA. This calculator applies that exact weighting, so the figure you get here should match what appears on your official VIT Vellore grade card down to two decimal places, assuming the GPA and credit values you enter are accurate.
VIT CGPA Formula
You multiply each semester's GPA by that semester's total credits, sum those products across all your semesters, then divide by your combined credit total. This is the method VIT's examination system follows and it is also the standard formula used across most Indian universities on a 10 point scale, so if you transfer or apply elsewhere, this number holds up.
VIT Grading Scale and Grade Points System
Your semester GPA - which feeds into this CGPA calculation is itself built from these letter grades:
| Grade | Points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| S | 10 | Outstanding |
| A | 9 | Excellent |
| B | 8 | Very Good |
| C | 7 | Good |
| D | 6 | Average |
| E | 5 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
| N | 0 | Failed a component (lab under 50/100 or FAT under 40) |
How to Calculate VIT CGPA Step by Step
- Add a row for each semester - you want to include this can be two semesters to all eight, since the calculator does not require a fixed number of rows.
- Enter that semester's GPA exactly as shown on your official grade card, not a rounded or estimated figure.
- Enter the total credits registered - use the credits actually reflected on your result, not the credits you originally attempted.
- Repeat for every remaining semester by adding a new row until all your completed semesters are covered.
- Click calculate - The tool multiplies each semester's GPA by its credits, adds the totals together, and divides by your combined credit count automatically.
- Check the Result - it displays your total credits and total weighted points, so you can verify the arithmetic yourself if you want to.
VIT CGPA Calculation Example
Take a student with three completed semesters:
- Semester 1: GPA 7.80, Credits 22
- Semester 2: GPA 8.20, Credits 24
- Semester 3: GPA 8.60, Credits 21
Weighted points: (7.80 × 22) + (8.20 × 24) + (8.60 × 21) = 171.6 + 196.8 + 180.6 = 549.0
Total credits: 22 + 24 + 21 = 67
CGPA: 549.0 ÷ 67 = 8.19
If this student had instead just averaged 7.80, 8.20 and 8.60 without weighting by credits, they'd get 8.20 - A number that's close but not exact and that small gap is precisely why credit weighted calculation matters when you're near a cutoff.
SGPA vs CGPA at VIT - What's the Main Difference
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester only. CGPA is the running, cumulative figure across every semester you've finished. Students sometimes use these terms interchangeably, but they answer different questions. SGPA tells you how one semester went, CGPA tells you how your degree is going overall.
If you need to work out a single semester's SGPA from your course-wise grades first, use the VIT GPA Calculator - its output is exactly what you'd feed into the CGPA calculator on VIT GPA Calculator page.
How Backlogs and F/N Grades Affect Students CGPA
A common misconception is that a failed course simply gets removed from the calculation once you clear the backlog. It doesn't work that way at VIT College’s. The credits for an F or N grade count in your total credits from the semester you originally attempted it, contributing zero grade points until you clear it and your grade card is updated with the revised grade.
This means one backlog can drag down two or three semesters' worth of CGPA if it is not cleared quickly, which is exactly why VIT colleges strongly encourage clearing arrears in the very next available cycle rather than waiting.
Why an Accurate CGPA Matters for Placements and Higher Studies
Most core companies visiting VIT during placement season set a minimum CGPA cutoff, commonly somewhere between 6.0 and 7.5 depending on the role and sector. Getting your own number wrong, even by 0.1 can mean applying to a drive you are not actually eligible for or worse, assuming you are below a cutoff you have actually cleared.
The same accuracy matters for MS or MBA applications abroad, where admission committees often ask for CGPA alongside its percentage equivalent, which you can work out next using the VIT CGPA to Percentage Calculator.
